Choosing the right MikroTik router comes down to three questions: how much traffic will pass through it, how many wired ports you need, and whether you want built-in Wi-Fi.
Home and small office
For a flat, a small shop or a home office, the hAP series is the usual starting point. These are compact routers with built-in Wi-Fi, several Gigabit ports and enough performance for everyday browsing, video calls and a handful of devices. The hAP ax models add Wi-Fi 6 for busier environments.
Wired routing without Wi-Fi
If access points already cover wireless and you just need a fast, reliable gateway, the hEX (RB750Gr3) is a proven five-port Gigabit router. For heavier loads — more clients, VPNs, faster internet — the RB5009 steps up with 2.5G and SFP+ (fibre) ports and a much stronger CPU.
High throughput and carrier-grade
When you are aggregating many users, running multiple VPN tunnels or pushing multi-gigabit internet, the Cloud Core Router (CCR) family is built for it: many CPU cores, high forwarding rates and SFP+/SFP28 uplinks.
A simple rule of thumb
- Home / small office, need Wi-Fi: hAP or hAP ax
- Wired gateway, Wi-Fi handled elsewhere: hEX or RB5009
- Many users, VPNs, multi-gig: CCR
